Updated: Revised Waterfront Plan

Put the Waterfront to Work

The waterfront of a great city is a special place. Providence’s waterfront along Narragansett Bay is no exception. The 2.5 miles that make up the City’s waterfront along Narragansett Bay, and the adjacent 590 acres of land are areas of special value, of particular concern and interest. Yet, like many waterfronts across the country, parts of our waterfront are areas in transition, with large, underutilized areas that have been vacant for years.

Now, the City of Providence has a new plan to Put the Waterfront to Work. The two main goals of this initiative are:

  1. Expand the Port of Providence from Thurbers Avenue to Fields Point, reserving the area solely for marine industrial uses with a new Working Waterfront Protection Zone.
  2. Help the area along Allens Avenue attract new businesses, create jobs and produce more tax revenue, while allowing existing businesses to continue to thrive.
